    Waste to Energy Crane

Henan Mine Crane supplies engineered grab overhead cranes for waste reception, bunker mixing and furnace feeding at waste-to-energy plants.

The furnace needs a steady waste supply while the crane also clears the tipping area and mixes the bunker. We bring the crane, grab and controls into one proposal, with handling capacity calculated for the complete working cycle.

A Waste Handling Package from One Crane Manufacturer

    Crane, grab and controls

We propose the bridge, trolley, waste grab, power supply and control system together. The technical offer defines what is included and how the equipment connects to the bunker and feed hoppers.

    Engineering around furnace demand

Our selection considers waste payload, cycle time, mixing and transfer work. You receive an equipment arrangement and operating basis that can be checked against the plant’s required handling rate.

    Support through commissioning

Installation guidance, commissioning assistance, operator training and spare-parts support can be included. The quotation separates equipment supply from site services, so the project team can budget both.

Our practical advantage: Henan Mine Crane has a published, commissioned automatic grab crane reference in waste incineration power generation. That experience provides a concrete starting point for discussing control functions and the proposed operating sequence.

What a Waste to Energy Crane Does

A waste to energy crane, also called a waste bunker crane or garbage grab crane, moves municipal solid waste inside the storage bunker and delivers it to incinerator feed hoppers. Its workload includes more than furnace feeding.

Bunker task What the crane arrangement provides
Clear the reception area Transfer newly delivered waste away from tipping positions to keep the receiving area usable.
Mix and redistribute waste Move waste between bunker zones to blend incoming material and manage the stored pile.
Feed the furnace hoppers Carry waste to designated discharge points, with controlled approach and hopper-ready interlocks where included.
Record handled loads A weighing option can record loads and feeding totals, with the measurement method and calibration procedure stated in the offer.

For plant operators, the key result is enough handling capacity to perform these tasks while maintaining the agreed feeding schedule. Crane tonnage alone does not describe that capacity.

Select the Crane and Waste Grab Together

For a building-mounted waste bunker, a dedicated double-girder grab overhead crane is the usual starting arrangement. We select the grab geometry, lifting machinery and travel system around the waste and bunker layout.

    Plant condition Equipment approach
Mixed municipal waste with bulky or irregular pieces Evaluate a multi-tine or orange-peel waste grab, including penetration, closure, retention and maintenance access.
A more uniform bulk stream Compare grab geometries against the actual material. A clamshell suitable for coal or sand is not automatically suitable for mixed refuse.
Frequent mixing and repeated furnace feeding Select the mechanisms and duty classification from the expected load spectrum and operating cycles.
An existing bunker and runway Develop the replacement layout around rail spacing, wheel reactions, building clearance and hopper reach.
A phased automation project Offer the initial operating modes and separately identify sensors, plant interfaces and functions for a later upgrade.

    Compare the Main Handling Arrangements

Arrangement Best procurement fit Important distinction
Dedicated waste grab overhead crane Bunker mixing, transfer and repeated incinerator feeding. Grab performance, complete-cycle throughput and continuous service duty drive the design.
General-purpose grab overhead crane Defined bulk streams such as coal, ore or other process materials. Waste compatibility and severe-duty requirements require a separate review.
Grab-and-hook overhead crane Areas combining occasional bulk handling with equipment lifting. Attachment flexibility does not establish suitability for continuous furnace feeding.
Electric-hoist overhead crane Workshop and equipment-maintenance lifting. This is a separate maintenance duty from waste bunker handling.
Grab-and-hook gantry crane Suitable outdoor auxiliary material handling areas. Ground rails, weather conditions and material compatibility determine suitability.

Technical Schedule for Your Offered Crane

The final specification identifies the crane being supplied, rather than combining capacity and speed ranges from unrelated catalogue models.

Parameter What our technical offer states
Rated lifting load — t The applicable rating and its load basis, including the grab and other below-hook equipment as required by the selected arrangement.
Net waste payload — t/cycle Expected waste mass per grab, calculated separately from the total suspended mass.
Grab volume — m³ Selected volume, geometry, grab self-weight and assumed waste density and filling factor.
Span, travel and lift — m Runway centre distance, working envelope, pickup depth, hopper discharge height and end approaches.
Motion speeds — m/min Hoisting, lowering, trolley and bridge speeds, with acceleration and approach settings used in the cycle calculation.
Handling rate — t/h Calculated performance for the agreed routes, workload split and operating assumptions.
Duty and environment Mechanism duty, load spectrum, operating hours, enclosure protection and corrosion provisions.
Controls and interfaces Operating modes, weighing option, alarms, plant signals and any contracted automation functions.
Building and service interfaces Wheel reactions, rail requirements, electrification, access platforms and grab-service arrangements.

Check Handling Capacity Before Choosing the Tonnage

A larger rated load does not necessarily produce more tonnes per hour. The crane must close the grab, hoist, travel, discharge and return; mixing and bunker transfer also consume cycles.

Illustrative calculation: why feeding capacity can be overstated

Assume a 5 m³ grab, waste bulk density of 0.35 t/m³ and a filling factor of 0.80. These are example inputs, not specifications of an offered Henan Mine Crane model.

    Calculation Illustrative result
    Waste payload: 5 × 0.35 × 0.80 1.40 t of waste per cycle.
If grab self-weight is assumed to be 2.00 t 3.40 t total suspended mass before any additional attachments; this is not a selected crane rating.
    A 90-second cycle and 75% productive utilisation 1.40 × (3,600 ÷ 90) × 0.75 = 42 t/h of waste handling.
    A plant feeding 750 t/day evenly over 24 hours 31.25 t/h average furnace feed.
If mixing and transfer add 50% to feeding tonnage 46.875 t/h total handling demand, before any additional project margin.

Result: the example arrangement delivers 42 t/h against an assumed demand of about 46.9 t/h. Selecting it solely from furnace feed tonnage would miss the additional workload. We evaluate grab size, route length, cycle time and crane arrangement together to close that gap.

For the project calculation, measured waste properties and the actual duty split replace these assumptions. The proposal states the performance basis so the acceptance test can use comparable conditions.

Automation That Matches the Plant’s Operating Routine

Automation can reduce repetitive operator movements, but the useful specification is the sequence the crane performs and how it handles interruptions. We separate the operating functions in the offer.

    Control level Offered operating scope
Manual or remote operation Operator-directed picking and discharge, with the contracted motion controls and protections.
Semi-automatic cycles Operator-selected pickup followed by defined travel or discharge sequences, subject to the agreed interlocks.
Automatic bunker operation A project-engineered sequence using the contracted position feedback, waste-surface information, hopper signals and zone management. Sensor coverage and recovery procedures form part of the scope.

Optional functions include weighing, anti-sway, multiple-crane coordination and plant control-system interfaces. The proposal identifies the required hardware and software, the signals exchanged with the plant, and the available operator override and fault-recovery modes.

Project Reference: Automatic Grab Crane in WTE Service

Henan Mine Crane’s manufacturer report dated December 2025 records an automatic grab crane entering service at a waste incineration power generation project.

    Published feature Installed project description
Motion and positioning Variable-frequency control throughout the crane, with absolute-encoder position feedback.
Handling functions Anti-sway, automatic fixed-point grabbing and constant-weight cyclic operation.
Operating modes Manual operation, wireless remote control and fixed-point discharge.
Controls and protection PLC and VFD control, with short-circuit, overload and hoisting-limit protections.
Future expansion A reserved interface for full automation.

The report does not publish plant identity, lifting capacity, grab volume or daily throughput. The reserved interface is an upgrade provision; it does not establish fully unattended bunker operation. Equipment for a new project is specified against that plant’s duty.

Plan for the Day a Crane or Grab Needs Service

In a waste bunker, a crane can have adequate normal capacity and still leave the plant exposed during maintenance. We develop the service arrangement alongside the operating layout.

    Crane coverage during an outage

For multiple-crane layouts, we assess whether the available crane can reach the required bunker zones and hoppers. Parking positions and access matter if a stopped crane obstructs a shared runway.

    A workable grab-service area

We incorporate the agreed grab landing and maintenance position into the layout. A spare grab or replacement wear-part package can be quoted where justified by the maintenance plan.

    Parts and maintenance information

The supply package can include parts identification, lubrication instructions, inspection guidance and recommended operational spares for the selected drives, brakes, ropes and grab equipment.

The crane count follows the feeding duty and outage strategy. Two cranes are not automatically full redundancy: the remaining equipment must have both the reach and the capacity required for the agreed reduced or full operating condition.

Protection for the Waste Bunker Environment

Moisture, airborne dust and corrosive conditions influence coatings, enclosures, cable systems and machinery access. Our engineering review selects those provisions from the stated service conditions.

The proposal can identify electrical enclosure protection, cabinet ventilation or cooling, corrosion treatment and service access. Where the plant has a classified hazardous area, equipment suitability and the required certification are addressed for that location. Explosion protection is not assumed from the words “waste crane”.

Hopper permissives, restricted zones and plant alarm signals can be included in the agreed control interface. Their function and response are documented with the plant team.

Waste to Energy Crane Price and Quotation Scope

Waste to energy cranes are quoted by configuration. Span, lifting height, grab type, duty, automation and site-service scope can change the price substantially. A marketplace asking price is useful only when its equipment scope is understood.

Public seller asking prices checked in 2026

Public listing Advertised price Scope limitation
Shandong Intercontinental Huanqiu Heavy Industry Machinery Co., Ltd. — garbage grab crane listing on Made-in-China US$8,800–118,800 per set; reference FOB price. The page presents differing capacity descriptions. This is an advertised configuration range, not a comparable fixed-specification installed WTE system.
Dafang seller store on DIYTrade — “Garbage grab crane” US$100,000 per piece. The listing does not define a fixed capacity, span or automation package, or establish an installed project cost.

These are other suppliers’ public asking prices, not Henan Mine Crane quotations or a verified transaction-price range. Freight, duties, building works and site installation are not established by the figures above.

What your Henan Mine Crane quotation separates

The commercial offer lists the crane and grab package, controls and automation options, electrification, recommended spares, documentation, packing and delivery basis. Installation guidance, commissioning and training are priced with their stated service scope. Runway steelwork, rails, civil works and plant integration responsibilities are identified so the purchasing team can compare the total project scope.

Lead time and warranty terms are stated in the offer for the selected configuration and destination.

From Engineering Drawings to Site Acceptance

Project stage Deliverables available within the agreed supply
Engineering review General arrangement, working envelope, wheel reactions, technical schedule and control-interface description.
Factory acceptance Agreed inspections and tests of crane motions, brakes, limits, control sequences and applicable load-test requirements, with corresponding records.
Site commissioning Installation checks, travel and hopper-position setup, plant-signal checks and weighing calibration where supplied.
Operational acceptance A representative waste-handling test using the agreed routes, material conditions and workload split. Factory motion tests alone do not prove site waste throughput.
Handover Contracted manuals, electrical drawings, parts lists, maintenance information, training and control-system backup or access provisions.

The acceptance plan ties the performance test to the same assumptions used in crane selection. This gives the plant team a clear basis for checking the supplied equipment.

    Waste to Energy Crane FAQs

What is the difference between crane lifting capacity and waste payload?

Waste payload is the waste carried in one grab. Total suspended mass also includes the grab and applicable attachments. Our technical schedule states the rating basis and expected net waste payload separately.

Can a waste to energy crane run automatically?

Yes, automatic sequences can be engineered for the agreed bunker layout and plant interfaces. The offered scope identifies sensing, control functions, operator intervention and recovery arrangements; a reserved interface alone does not provide fully unattended operation.

How many waste cranes does a plant need?

The number follows the total feeding, mixing and transfer workload and the maintenance strategy. We assess both normal operation and the required operating condition when a crane is unavailable.

Can you supply a replacement crane for an existing waste bunker?

We can evaluate a replacement against the existing runway, building clearance, hopper positions and plant interfaces. The proposal includes the crane arrangement and reactions for project coordination.

Do you provide installation and commissioning support?

Installation guidance, commissioning assistance and operator training can be included in the offer. The quotation identifies the selected services, site responsibilities and commercial terms.

What is needed to start a waste crane quotation?

A bunker layout and short description of daily waste intake, furnace feeding demand and desired operating mode are enough to begin. Henan Mine Crane develops the initial arrangement and identifies the remaining design inputs.

    Thermal Power Plant Crane Systems

Overhead and gantry crane systems for turbine-generator installation, planned overhaul, coal handling and power plant equipment maintenance.

A thermal power plant crane must match the lifting task in its specific plant area. Turbine-hall cranes are selected from heavy erection and overhaul loads, hook coverage and runway capacity. Coal-handling cranes are selected from grab payload, material properties and operating cycles.

    DESIGN BASISErection and Overhaul Loads

What Is a Thermal Power Plant Crane?

A thermal power plant crane is a lifting system specified for a defined area of a coal-fired, gas-fired, biomass or cogeneration facility. In the turbine hall, an overhead traveling crane installs and later handles generator and turbine components. Fuel-handling buildings may use grab cranes for coal. Boiler, mill, pump and maintenance areas often require smaller bridge cranes or local hoists.

These applications have different load cases. A turbine-hall crane must reach every critical erection and overhaul position with sufficient lifting capacity and clearance. A coal grab crane is sized from bulk density, grab volume, hourly throughput and repeated operating cycles. A single generic crane specification cannot describe both duties reliably.

Thermal Power Plant Crane Selection Considerations

    • Maximum suspended load: identify the generator stator, rotor, turbine casing and other heavy components; include the lifting beam, attachment and rigging in the load calculation.
    • Construction and maintenance: check the original unit erection plan and the future overhaul plan. The heaviest load and most difficult hook approach may occur at different stages.
    • Turbine-hall geometry: provide runway span and elevation, travel length, building section, delivery opening, hook approach and the complete lifting route.
    • Main and auxiliary hooks: define each hook’s load, speed, operating duty and permitted combined use.
    • Coal and ash properties: state bulk density, material temperature, dust exposure, required throughput and operating cycles before selecting a grab crane.
    • EPC schedule: coordinate drawing approval, runway readiness, crane delivery, erection, load testing and generating-unit installation.

Thermal Power Plant Crane Systems Compared

Crane system Power plant duty Primary selection factor Project interface
Double-girder turbine-hall overhead crane Generator and turbine installation, rotor handling and overhaul Maximum suspended load, hook reach and controlled placement Runway loads, main and auxiliary hooks, building clearance
Single- or double-girder maintenance crane Boiler, pump and auxiliary-equipment areas Component load, headroom and service frequency Local building support and maintenance access
Four-rope grab overhead crane Coal or other suitable bulk-material handling Bulk density, grab payload and cycles per hour Dust control, hopper positions and material temperature
Cross-travel overhead crane Coal-mill equipment transfer across connected bays Equipment route and track-switching arrangement Runway connection and control logic
Double-girder gantry crane Outdoor component receiving and laydown Heavy-lift route, span and outdoor duty Foundations, wind limits and power supply

Selection rule: specify the turbine hall from the most demanding erection and overhaul lift; specify a grab crane from material throughput and operating duty. These are separate procurement packages.

Crane Duties Across the Power Plant

Plant area Typical load Critical consideration
Turbine hall Generator stator, rotor, turbine casing and major assemblies Main-hook capacity, lifting height, hook approach and precision control
Boiler and feedwater areas Fans, pumps, valves and service modules Restricted headroom, access openings and hot surfaces
Coal-handling building Raw coal between storage and transfer positions Grab payload, dust, cycle time and fire protection
Ash and slag area Bulk material where crane handling is required Temperature, abrasion, corrosion and grab suitability
Outdoor laydown yard Large delivered components and maintenance assemblies Foundation capacity, travel route and weather conditions
double-girder grab overhead crane for coal and bulk material handling
Fuel-handling cranes require a grab and operating duty matched to the material and transfer process.

    Turbine-Hall Crane Engineering

The heaviest load may be lifted during generator installation, while the most difficult hook position may be required during rotor extraction years later. The crane general arrangement should show every critical pickup and set-down position in plan and section.

    Design item Required project information
Rated lifting capacity Component mass plus lifting beam and rigging; main and auxiliary hook load cases
Hook coverage Runway span and length, approach dimensions, pickup elevation and required set-down positions
Runway and building Maximum wheel loads, horizontal forces, rail tolerances, access and erection method
Motion control Normal travel speed, minimum controllable positioning speed, braking and fault response
Maintenance Walkways, inspection points, electrical isolation, equipment removal route and spare parts

If two cranes are intended for a tandem lift, the lift plan must check unequal load sharing, combined runway reactions, coordinated operation and a safe response to a fault. Two independent cranes do not automatically provide tandem-lift capability.

Published Henan Mine Crane Product Ranges

These published product-family ranges support early selection. A final power plant crane specification requires the verified load cases, operating duty and site drawings.

Product family Capacity Span Lifting height / duty Relevant area

MG double-girder gantry crane 5–500 t broad family 8–40 m 6–30 m; A3–A8 broad family Outdoor laydown and equipment transfer

The Indonesian 120 t turbine-hall crane is a separate project reference. Its capacity must not be treated as the standard requirement for every generating unit.

Project Reference: Two 120 t Cranes in Indonesia

For a thermal power project in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, Henan Mine Crane reports supplying two 120 t double-girder bridge cranes. The cranes supported the installation of three 380 MW supercritical coal-fired generating units. Heavy equipment handling, smooth movement and controlled positioning were central requirements.

This project demonstrates a turbine-hall application. A different plant requires its own stator and rotor weights, rigging plan, hall dimensions, hook approach and runway calculations before selecting capacity. View the published thermal-power project account.

    Dust, Heat and Safe Operation

The turbine hall, coal building and ash system have different operating environments. Specify ambient and radiant temperature, dust, humidity, corrosion and cleaning practice separately for each area. Electrical enclosure ratings and protective features should follow the actual site classification.

    • Coal and ash: confirm bulk density, grab payload, material temperature, abrasion and dust containment.
    • Hazardous locations: identify any formally classified area before specifying explosion-protected equipment.
    • Load protection: define overload limits, brakes, emergency stops, travel limits and recovery from power or drive faults.
    • Maintainability: provide access to the hoist, trolley, electrical system and crane runway after the generating units are installed.
    • Acceptance: agree factory inspection, site alignment, functional testing, load tests, operating records and training before handover.

    Thermal Power Plant Crane FAQ

What crane is used in a turbine hall?

A double-girder overhead traveling crane is commonly selected for heavy generator and turbine installation and later overhaul. Its capacity and hook arrangement follow the verified plant lifting plan.

How is turbine-hall crane capacity determined?

Check the maximum component mass together with lifting-beam and rigging weight. Then verify hook combinations, runway reactions, clearances, duty and the approved lifting method.

Does every 380 MW unit require a 120 t crane?

No. The Indonesian project is one 120 t reference. Another unit must be sized from its own equipment loads and erection and overhaul plan.

What does a 120 t power plant crane cost?

A project quotation requires the main and auxiliary hook ratings, span, lifting height, controls, runway interface, destination and installation scope. A published 100/20 t equipment price cannot be presented as the price of a 120 t power plant system.

Can a coal grab crane replace the turbine-hall crane?

No. The grab crane is designed for repeated bulk-material cycles. The turbine-hall crane handles large suspended machinery and controlled positioning.

What Is an RTG Crane for a Container Yard?

An RTG crane, or rubber-tyred gantry crane, is a mobile container-stacking crane carried by multi-wheel rubber-tyred bogies. It straddles several container rows and a truck or terminal-tractor lane, lifts containers with a telescopic spreader and travels along the storage block without fixed runway rails.

A typical container-yard starting point is 40.5 t under spreader, five to seven container rows plus one vehicle lane, and one-over-four to one-over-six stacking. Final capacity, span, lift height, speed, power source and fleet quantity follow the approved yard plan and operating model.

RTGs are used in marine terminals, inland container depots, rail-intermodal facilities and logistics hubs where storage density and block mobility are both required. The absence of travel rails supports phased expansion and equipment relocation between compatible blocks.

Hoisting, trolley travel and rubber-tyred gantry travel combine within one container-yard handling cycle.

    RTG Crane Selection Considerations

    Container and Lift Profile

ISO size mix, maximum gross mass, high-cube share, reefer volume, out-of-gauge handling and single- or twin-lift operation establish capacity and spreader scope.

    Yard Block Geometry

Row count, truck lane, stack height, row pitch, block length, transfer positions and block-end turning area define the crane envelope.

    Throughput and Duty

Annual TEU, peak moves, rehandle ratio, operating shifts, productive hours, transfer-vehicle demand and availability target control mechanism duty and fleet size.

    Power and Emissions

Grid capacity, fuel and electricity costs, block-change frequency, cable routes, charging strategy and local emissions targets affect power architecture.

    Pavement and Environment

Allowable wheel load, pavement settlement, gradient, drainage, wind, temperature, salt fog, rainfall, dust and seismic criteria require coordinated civil and crane design.

    Control and TOS Integration

Cab, remote or automated operation; positioning; OCR; anti-sway; communications; diagnostics; TOS/ECS interfaces and recovery modes require defined ownership.

    RTG Crane Configurations Compared

Configuration Operating Strength Project Check Typical Yard Pattern
Diesel-Electric RTG Independent power and frequent block changes Fuel use, engine service, noise and local emissions Developing yards or blocks without reliable grid access
Hybrid RTG Mobile operation with energy recovery and reduced engine loading Battery lifecycle, thermal management and control complexity High-utilization blocks requiring mobility and fuel reduction
Cable-Reel Electric RTG Low local emissions, low noise and reduced engine maintenance Substation, cable route, changeover and block-transfer method Stable long blocks with limited cross-block movement

The Henan Mine Crane RTG specification guide lists typical planning ranges of 12–25 m/min for loaded hoisting, 30–60 m/min for trolley travel and 45–90 m/min for gantry travel. Final values follow drive sizing, stability, anti-sway performance and terminal traffic analysis.

    5+1, 6+1 and 7+1 RTG Yard Layouts

RTG layout shorthand states the number of container rows plus the vehicle lane under the gantry. A 6+1 RTG spans six storage rows and one truck or terminal-tractor lane. Wider spans increase block coverage but also affect trolley travel, structural mass, wheel loads, drive power and wind response.

Layout Yard Effect Engineering Focus Typical Application
5 Rows + 1 Lane Narrower block and shorter trolley path Brownfield geometry and moderate density Inland depot or constrained terminal
6 Rows + 1 Lane Balanced density and truck interface Cycle time, lane clearance and wheel load General marine or intermodal yard
7 Rows + 1 Lane Higher storage density per block Longer span, trolley travel and pavement demand High-volume terminal with planned blocks

    Stacking Height

“One over five” means five stored containers with clearance to carry one container above the stack. High-cube containers, pavement tolerances, tyre deflection, spreader depth, twistlock engagement, structural deflection and operating clearance all enter the vertical envelope.

One-over-four reduces structural height and wheel load. One-over-five commonly balances density and access. One-over-six increases storage density but also raises wind exposure, lift height and rehandle sensitivity.

Row count, vehicle-lane clearance and block-end transfer space are approved as one operating geometry.

RTG, RMG and Straddle Carrier Compared

System Mobility Storage Model Infrastructure Strongest Fit
RTG Crane Moves between compatible blocks Dense multi-row blocks Wheel paths and optional electrical works Flexible allocation and phased growth

Spreader, Anti-Sway, Automation and Yard Infrastructure

    Container Interface

A telescopic spreader normally covers 20 ft and 40 ft ISO containers; 45 ft handling, twin lift or special interfaces are specified separately. The rated-load definition must state whether capacity is measured below the spreader and whether spreader self-weight is excluded.

    Motion Control

Rope geometry, drive control and active anti-sway reduce residual motion. The performance specification should define allowable sway, positioning tolerance, twistlock confirmation, landing logic and operating behavior under wind.

    Automation Scope

Remote or automated RTG operation requires controlled traffic, reliable container identity, communications, safety zoning and exception handling. TOS job data, positioning, cameras, OCR, collision control, recovery modes and acceptance scenarios form one integrated scope.

RTG crane spreader and anti-sway control during container handling
Spreader control, anti-sway and target positioning directly affect cycle repeatability.

    Pavement and Wheel Loads

Maximum and minimum wheel loads, tyre pressure, dynamic factors, settlement limits, braking cases and storm parking loads are issued for civil coordination.

    Steering and Block Change

Straight, cross, pivot or coordinated steering affects turning radius, block-end width, alignment control and the approved transfer route.

    Wind and Marine Protection

Operating wind, out-of-service wind, storm travel, anchoring, coating system, enclosure protection and salt-fog exposure require site-specific definition.

What Is an RMG Crane for a Container Yard?

An RMG crane, or rail-mounted gantry crane, travels on fixed runway rails and handles ISO containers with a telescopic spreader. The structure can span container rows, truck lanes, railway tracks or combinations of these operating zones.

Fixed rails provide a repeatable travel path for precise positioning, grid-electric operation and progressive automation. RMG systems are therefore suited to permanent high-throughput blocks, intermodal rail terminals, inland container depots and marine-terminal transfer areas.

The crane is only one part of the operating system. Rail alignment, foundations, power distribution, container transfer positions, safety zoning, terminal data and recovery procedures must be engineered as one coordinated project.

RMG cranes operating over fixed container yard blocks
Fixed travel rails support wide spans, electric power, consistent positioning and structured container-yard traffic.

    RMG Crane Selection Considerations

    Container and Lift Profile

Container sizes, maximum gross mass, high-cube share, reefer volume, out-of-gauge handling and single- or twin-lift duty establish rated load and spreader functions.

    Rail Gauge and Coverage

Row pitch, rail tracks, truck lanes, service roads, safety clearances and cantilever transfer points define span, outreach and total crane width.

    Stacking and Throughput

Stack tiers, clearance above the top container, annual TEU, peak moves, rehandle ratio, shifts and availability target control lift, speed and mechanism duty.

    Rails and Foundations

Rail size, alignment tolerance, wheel loads, settlement limits, drainage, end stops and storm restraints require coordinated crane and civil calculations.

    Power and Environment

Voltage, frequency, cable route, grid capacity, wind, temperature, salt fog, rainfall, dust and seismic inputs determine electrical and protective design.

    Control and Data Interfaces

Cab, remote or automated operation; anti-sway; positioning; OCR; truck guidance; diagnostics; ECS and TOS interfaces need defined performance and ownership boundaries.

    RMG Crane Configurations Compared

Configuration Operating Strength Primary Project Check Typical Application
Single-Cantilever RMG One external transfer zone with a compact opposite side Truck or rail interface position and maintenance access Space-limited depot or rail-transfer block
Double-Cantilever RMG Transfer lanes or tracks on both sides of the rail gauge Outreach, wheel loads, traffic separation and wind area High-throughput container yard or intermodal terminal
Cab or Remote-Control RMG Direct operator control with optional centralized workstations Visibility, camera coverage, communications and recovery access New or upgraded yards with staged digitalization

A published product example lists trolley travel up to 30 m/min and gantry travel up to 40 m/min. Final speeds require cycle analysis, structural checks and agreement on positioning accuracy.

RMG Yard Layout and Stacking Geometry

Rail gauge is measured between the crane rail centerlines, not by container-row count alone. The span must include row pitch, railway tracks or truck lanes inside the legs, clearance to fixed equipment and the permitted sway envelope.

Cantilevers place transfer positions outside the runway. Outreach is set from the rail centerline to the spreader centerline at the exchange point, with structural clearance for trucks, wagons, terminal tractors and maintenance routes.

Lifting height includes the highest planned container tier, the selected top clearance, spreader depth and operating tolerance. Block length, crane quantity and passing strategy must also be resolved before rail and power design is frozen.

RMG crane spanning container stacks and transfer positions
Rail gauge, cantilever reach, stacking height and transfer-lane position are fixed from the approved terminal layout.

RMG vs. RTG for Container Yard Planning

RMG and RTG cranes can handle the same ISO container flow, but they organize a terminal differently. The selection affects land use, civil works, power distribution, traffic control, fleet flexibility and the route to automation.

Decision Factor RMG Crane RTG Crane Planning Effect
Travel System Fixed rails and repeatable runway Rubber tyres and block-change capability RMG favors permanent blocks; RTG favors operating flexibility
Civil Scope Rails, beams or foundations, end stops and settlement control Heavy-duty pavement, wheel paths and turning areas Whole-site civil cost must be compared, not crane price alone
Power Normally grid electric along a fixed block Diesel-electric, hybrid, battery or grid-electric Substation capacity and cable routing belong in the layout study
Automation Fixed travel path supports repeatable positioning Automation must also manage steering and block movement RMG is often selected for controlled automated blocks

A lifecycle comparison should include equipment quantity, land capacity, rail or pavement works, energy, labor, maintenance, rehandles, expansion strategy and the financial effect of downtime.

RMG Cycle Time, Fleet Size and Availability

Rated speeds do not equal productive moves per hour. A realistic operating model separates mechanical motion from container identification, twistlock confirmation, final alignment, truck or wagon arrival, terminal-data handshakes and exception recovery.

    Demand Profile

Annual TEU is converted into peak-hour lifts by import dwell, train windows, vessel exchange peaks, gate appointments and the share of loaded and empty containers.

    Cycle Components

Hoist, trolley and gantry travel can overlap within safe limits. Spreader landing, twistlock checks, target confirmation and transfer-vehicle positioning remain separate cycle inputs.

    Operational Losses

Rehandles, traffic conflicts, weather restrictions, shift changes, inspections, data exceptions and maintenance reduce net productive availability below theoretical output.

    Fleet Resilience

Crane quantity must allow planned service, fault recovery and peak demand without isolating critical rail or truck exchange positions.

A procurement specification should state the reference move, starting and ending coordinates, container mass, permissible simultaneous motions, transfer-vehicle assumptions and measured acceptance method. This turns a general moves-per-hour target into a testable performance requirement.

    Rails, Foundations and Power Infrastructure

    Rail and Alignment

Rail section, fastening, gauge, straightness, level, joint detail and electrical grounding form part of the crane–civil interface schedule.

    Wheel Loads and Settlement

Maximum, minimum, operating and storm wheel loads are issued for foundation design; differential settlement limits protect wheel sharing and skew control.

    End Stops and Storm Safety

Buffers, end stops, rail clamps, storm pins or tie-downs are selected from travel speed, site wind and the terminal storm-securement plan.

    Electric Power

Cable reel, cable trench, conductor system or project-specific supply is coordinated with substations, isolation, emergency power and maintenance access.

    Spreader, Anti-Sway and RMG Automation

    Container Interface

A telescopic spreader handles 20 ft, 40 ft and 45 ft containers. Twistlock status, flipper control, skew correction, container detection and overload protection are specified around the container mix and operating method.

    Motion Control

Variable-frequency drives, anti-sway, anti-skew, travel synchronization and target positioning shorten the final approach while protecting containers, trucks, wagons and adjacent stacks.

    Automation Scope

Remote or automated RMG operation can combine cameras, laser or satellite positioning, OCR, truck guidance, safety scanners, equipment control and terminal operating system interfaces. Manual recovery and exception handling remain part of the acceptance plan.

These public figures are market references, not Henan Mine Crane quotations. A comparable commercial offer must state crane quantity, spreader, rails and electrification boundary, automation, civil interfaces, freight, erection, commissioning, testing, training, spare parts, taxes, Incoterm and warranty.

RMG Maintenance, Spares and Lifecycle Cost

Capital price is only one part of RMG ownership. Planned access, component standardization, diagnostic data, local service capability and critical-spares strategy affect availability throughout the crane’s working life.

    Maintenance Access

Platforms, walkways, lighting, lifting points, trolley access, electrical-room clearance and safe isolation provisions should be reviewed on the general arrangement.

    Critical Spare Parts

Commissioning spares, operating spares and long-lead strategic spares are separated by failure consequence, installed fleet size and local procurement time.

    Condition and Diagnostics

Fault history, motor and drive status, brake monitoring, operating hours, overload records and alarm trends support planned intervention and faster recovery.

    Structural Protection

Coating system, drainage, enclosure protection, corrosion allowance and inspection access are matched to marine salt, humidity, rainfall, dust and temperature exposure.

A complete offer can schedule preventive-maintenance tasks, recommended tools, consumables, spare-parts quantities, training modules, warranty response and technical-document language. These items make competing quotations easier to evaluate on equivalent service scope.

What Is a Railway Maintenance Crane?

A railway maintenance crane is lifting equipment selected for servicing, overhauling or assembling rail vehicles and railway assets. Inside a depot, a bridge crane moves components above a maintenance road. In an outdoor repair or storage yard, a gantry crane can serve a fixed travel corridor without relying on a roof-supported runway. A semi-gantry crane can connect a building-supported side to a ground-level rail where the layout permits.

The term also appears in searches for self-propelled railborne cranes used for track work and accident recovery. Those machines require rail-vehicle approvals, route compatibility and on-track operating rules. The fixed overhead and gantry systems shown here are for depots and yards; they are not railborne breakdown cranes.

Within one covered workshop, selection narrows to building runways, hook height and the component path. A depot-wide purchase also covers outdoor yards, civil works, simultaneous lifts and fleet availability.

Plan the Lift from Vehicle to Workstation

A crane schedule should follow each component through removal, transfer, repair and reinstallation. In a depot, a traction motor may move from a vehicle on a pit road to a service stand. A bogie may travel from a drop-table area to inspection, washing or overhaul positions. Outdoor storage or loading may need a separate gantry because the indoor bridge does not reach the yard.

    • Record vehicle type, maintenance task and approved pickup points.
    • Mark the load path across tracks, pits, doors, platforms and workstations.
    • Set the heaviest complete suspended mass, including beam and rigging.
    • Count ordinary lifts and exceptional heavy or multi-point lifts separately.
overhead crane above a railway maintenance workshop
Maintenance routes determine the required bridge coverage and hook approach.

A fleet plan can use one crane type for repetitive general work and a different engineered solution for occasional long or high-consequence lifts. Do not size every bay from a single headline vehicle weight.

    Railway Maintenance Crane Selection Considerations

    Location and coverage

Choose by where the load must move: under a roof, along a fixed outdoor track or between a building wall and yard rail.

    Complete load and lift points

Include the component, beams, slings and clamps; obtain vehicle-maker lifting instructions for bogies or bodies.

    Structure and civil works

Check roof or runway capacity for bridge cranes and ground rails, drainage and foundations for gantries.

    Duty and availability

Specify lifts per shift, load spectrum, operating hours, maintenance access and the consequence of a crane being out of service.

The procurement comparison should keep crane equipment, civil works, electrical installation, commissioning and lifting attachments as separate priced lines.

    Crane Configurations by Maintenance Location

Maintenance location Configuration to evaluate Deciding interface
Indoor vehicle or component bay Single- or double-girder bridge crane. Runway rail centers, roof clearance, hook approach and structural wheel loads.
Long assembly or two-point task Double-trolley bridge crane or a specifically engineered multi-point arrangement. Individual hook ratings, combined load, synchronization and lift plan.
Open maintenance yard Single- or double-girder gantry crane. Travel-rail route, foundations, vehicle clearances, power and wind conditions.
Building-to-yard edge Semi-gantry crane where one side has an adequate elevated support. Wall-side runway, ground rail alignment and differential settlement.
Track renewal or derailment response Specialist railborne or road-rail crane. Rail vehicle approvals, route limits, outriggers and recovery plan.

Select a fixed crane from the actual service envelope. A railborne crane is a different procurement category from a depot bridge or yard gantry.

Technical Data That Determines the Crane

    Input Specify Purchase consequence
Capacity Maximum complete suspended mass and load distribution at each hook. Sets hoist, bridge, brakes, wheels and support reactions.
Geometry Bridge span or gantry rail gauge, travel length, hook height and approach limits. Defines which tracks and workstations are truly served.
Operating duty Lifts per hour, shifts, average and maximum load frequency. Changes machinery life, controls and service intervals.
Precision Positioning requirements at pins, stands, drop pits and fixtures. May justify variable-speed motions and anti-sway controls.
Site Electrical supply, indoor/outdoor exposure, drainage and maintenance access. Determines protection, civil work and power distribution.

For a retrofit, an approved general arrangement should follow an actual site survey. For a new depot, send maximum wheel loads and electrical demands to the civil and building designers before they freeze the structural scheme.

One Crane or a Depot-Wide Fleet?

A single bridge crane may cover several adjacent work positions only when its runway reaches them, the operating routes remain clear and simultaneous maintenance demand is low enough. Multiple cranes become relevant when separate bays work at the same time or when an indoor crane cannot reach an outdoor yard.

Estimate peak overlapping lifts by task and bay, then check whether each crane can reach pickup and landing positions without crossing an occupied road. Separate routine handling from rare bogie, carbody or recovery lifts. Availability planning should also state whether maintenance can continue while one crane is isolated for service.

For outdoor work, compare a shared gantry travel corridor with separate local cranes. Rail crossings, road vehicles, parked rolling stock, turnouts and pedestrian access can limit a theoretically large coverage area.

Bridge Crane, Yard Gantry or Railborne Crane?

    Bridge crane

Best evaluated where an engineered building runway exists and the lift stays within a workshop. Leaves the floor free but transfers reactions into the structure.

    Gantry crane

Best evaluated for a fixed outdoor maintenance route or storage/transfer area. Requires travel rails or an engineered surface and a clear path for legs.

    Railborne crane

Used for trackside installation, infrastructure work or recovery at changing locations. Must be selected as a rail vehicle with route and operational approvals.

A container RMG is optimized for container handling at a freight terminal. It should not be specified for bogie or machinery maintenance merely because both gantries run on ground rails.

    Bogie, Wheelset and Long-Load Attachments

    Component-specific lifting gear

Bogies, wheelsets, traction motors and gearboxes have different centers of gravity and pickup points. The attachment must match the component and the vehicle maker’s instructions. Include lifting beams, hooks, clamps and rigging in the rated load calculation and inspection plan.

    Two-point and multi-point lifting

A long load may need two hooks on one crane, or another engineered arrangement. Specify the rating of each hoist, maximum combined load, hook spacing, load sharing, control mode, monitoring and response to a fault. A complete carbody lift needs a vehicle-specific design and approved procedure; a standard crane’s nameplate rating is not sufficient evidence.

    Movement quality

Low-speed hoisting and travel, predictable braking and suitable operator sightlines matter during installation onto stands and fixtures. State the required handling task in the RFQ so the control scheme can be evaluated rather than assumed.

    Runways, Ground Rails and Power

Bridge cranes need a verified runway span, rail elevation, beam condition and available headroom. Gantry cranes need the travel-rail geometry, ground bearing or foundation design, drainage and safe separation from vehicle and pedestrian routes. Both need a power route that avoids inspection pits, door movements and maintenance access.

At electrified facilities, define the traction-power isolation boundary and which authority controls it. Crane insulation, if separately specified, does not substitute for isolation or site electrical safety rules. Include earthing, conductor position and emergency-stop zoning in the interface review.

multiple overhead cranes installed in railway maintenance building
Building structure, runway rails and power routing are part of the depot lifting design.

For a yard gantry, also establish the parked position, end stops, wind monitoring and storm-securing method appropriate to the site.

    Safe Operation and Acceptance

The purchase specification should list overload protection, hoist and travel limits, emergency stop, buffers, alarms, braking and maintenance access. It should also state the local crane rules and railway operator procedures that apply at the destination. Load-test and acceptance arrangements must be agreed before delivery.

Commissioning should prove travel clearances, electrical functions, braking, control modes and each special attachment. Multi-point lifts require a documented procedure, defined exclusion zone and a competent lifting team. Vehicle movement, pit access and adjacent track use must be controlled during the lift.

Provide operators and maintainers with the approved drawings, manuals, inspection records, spare-parts list and a planned maintenance schedule for the installed system.

These records establish railway-maintenance supply experience. The crane schedule for a new depot must still be built from its own vehicle fleet, lift paths and structural conditions.

Railway Maintenance Crane Price and Project Budget

Public 2026 supplier prices, checked on 28 September 2026, can frame an equipment budget. They describe standard industrial bridge and gantry cranes, not a completed railway maintenance facility. Every price below is in USD and must be matched to the quoted span, duty, hoist and delivery scope.

Public 2026 equipment reference Indicative USD price Source and scope
10 t double-girder overhead crane US$12,000–35,000 Henan Mine Crane market guide; equipment budget, delivery term not stated.
5 t single-girder gantry, 18 m span US$11,000–17,500 Weiying Crane, 10 June 2026; equipment price reference, delivery term not stated.
20 t double-girder gantry, 22 m span US$39,000–57,000 Weiying Crane, 10 June 2026; equipment price reference, delivery term not stated.
10 t double-girder gantry, about 20 m span US$20,000–30,000 Voitto Crane 2026 guide; FOB factory reference from a separate supplier.

These are market references, not Henan Mine Crane project offers. Shipping, insurance, taxes, foundations, runway or yard rails, power distribution, installation, commissioning, load testing and vehicle-specific lifting fixtures are outside or not defined in these equipment ranges. Synchronized multi-hook systems and railborne recovery cranes need separate engineered quotations. Compare supplier bids only after the same exclusions and delivery terms are shown line by line.

Lifecycle Planning for a Maintenance Depot

A depot crane is part of the maintenance timetable. The technical offer should therefore state inspection points, access to brakes, drives and ropes, recommended spares, fault reporting and a method to isolate one crane without disabling unrelated bays. Outdoor gantries also need a site-specific corrosion and weather-protection plan.

For a fleet of cranes, standardizing controls and critical spare parts where technically appropriate can simplify maintenance. Ask suppliers to identify which components are common across models and which are unique to a heavy or dual-trolley unit.

    Engineering and Procurement Deliverables

    • Crane schedule by bay and yard, with rated loads, spans or rail gauges, hook heights and duty.
    • General arrangements showing lift paths, obstacles, approaches and maintenance access.

    Railway Maintenance Crane FAQ

What crane is used for railway maintenance?

Indoor rolling-stock maintenance commonly uses a bridge crane; a fixed outdoor service corridor may use a gantry or semi-gantry. Trackside construction and recovery use specialist railborne or road-rail equipment.

How is a railway maintenance crane different from a rail workshop overhead crane?

A rail workshop overhead crane is one indoor bridge-crane solution. Railway maintenance crane is a broader buying category covering depot bridges, outdoor gantries and the question of specialist on-track equipment.

Can a gantry crane lift a railway carbody?

Only when the vehicle lifting points, load sharing, gantry rating, attachments, ground rails and an approved lift procedure have been engineered together. A general-purpose gantry rating alone is insufficient.

Is one crane enough for a depot?

That depends on simultaneous lifts, runway coverage, heavy-lift frequency and whether maintenance can continue during crane service. Build a bay-by-bay task schedule before deciding fleet size.

What should be included in a railway maintenance crane quote?

Rated load, geometry, duty, control, attachments, wheel loads, site interfaces, testing, delivery term, exclusions and service documents should be stated explicitly.

How much does a railway maintenance crane cost?

Public 2026 industrial crane equipment ranges vary from thousands to tens of thousands of US dollars for common bridge and gantry configurations. A depot-ready system depends on civil works, electrical scope, lifting fixtures and installation; railborne recovery cranes are a separate quote category.

What Is a Rail Workshop Overhead Crane?

A rail workshop overhead crane is a bridge crane running on elevated building runways above a railway maintenance, assembly or overhaul bay. Its bridge travels along the workshop, while the hoist or trolley travels across it to move bogies, wheelsets, traction motors, gearboxes and other components between vehicles, pits and workstations.

It is a building-mounted maintenance machine. A rail-mounted container gantry crane serves intermodal freight handling; a railway mobile crane travels to an outdoor recovery or track-work site. Neither is a direct substitute for a bridge crane inside a rolling-stock depot.

The most suitable configuration depends on the heaviest complete lift and the handling path. A single-girder hoist can serve a light component bay; a double-girder crane is considered for heavier assemblies, higher duty or special lifting attachments. Whole-carbody lifts require a separately engineered lifting system and procedure, not an assumption based on crane capacity alone.

Which Maintenance Tasks Must the Crane Cover?

Map the lift from its pickup point to its landing point before setting crane travel length. In a locomotive or EMU workshop, the crane may remove a traction motor from the vehicle, carry it clear of the rail and pit, then lower it onto a maintenance stand. A bogie or wheelset route may cross several tracks and fixed service platforms.

    • Component removal and replacement above a vehicle or inspection pit.
    • Transfer from track position to bogie drop, wheelset, motor or overhaul bay.
    • Loading a service trolley or test stand without obstructing adjacent trains.
    • Occasional long or off-center loads requiring an approved lifting beam or two-point arrangement.

Vehicle-maintenance and commissioning applications are reported for the Lahore Orange Line project.

Record each load’s weight, center of gravity, pickup height, travel route, landing clearance and expected daily lift count. These facts determine hook approach, speed, control position and safe exclusion zones.

    Rail Workshop Crane Selection Considerations

    Complete suspended load

Use the heaviest part plus slings, lifting beam, clamps and other gear below the hook; confirm whether the rated load is needed at every pickup point.

    Track-to-hook geometry

Measure runway rail centers, rail-top level, pit depth, minimum roof clearance, bridge end approach and usable hook travel.

    Workshop structure

Have the building engineer check runway beams, columns, bracing and foundations against final crane wheel loads and horizontal forces.

    Duty and precision

Specify lifts per hour, shifts, load spectrum and the low-speed control needed for mating pins, bogies and sensitive assemblies.

For a retrofit, the usable hook height and existing runway capacity often decide the viable design before a nominal tonnage does. New facilities should coordinate crane reactions with the structural designer before the building steelwork is fixed.

Which Overhead Crane Configuration Fits the Bay?

Configuration Appropriate workshop task What to verify before purchase
Single-girder electric hoist Parts, tools, small wheelsets and general maintenance loads within the selected rating. Hook height, span, hoist duty, rail support and the actual attachment weight.
Double-girder bridge crane Heavier bogies, machinery and repeated overhaul handling where trolley or duty flexibility is needed. Bridge self-weight, wheel loads, access for maintenance and lift clearances.
Double-trolley / two-hook crane Long assemblies needing two controlled lifting points on one bridge. Combined rating, individual hook ratings, spacing, load share, synchronization and lifting procedure.
Suspended / underhung crane Selected light-duty side bays where floor-supported runways are impractical. Roof support capacity, suspension points and hook coverage.

Henan Mine Crane lists double-girder bridge cranes and double-trolley overhead cranes. A two-hook design is specified from the actual lifting plan; it should not be treated as an automatic approval for lifting a complete carbody.

Technical Data to Fix Before Manufacturing

Parameter Buyer input Why it matters
Rated capacity Maximum complete suspended mass at the hook(s). Selects hoist, bridge, brakes and runway reactions.
Span and runway length Runway rail center distance and required long-travel coverage. Determines bridge geometry and which workstations are reached.
Hook height and approach Lowest pickup, highest lift, roof clear height, end and side approach. Prevents conflict with rolling stock, pits, roof and service platforms.
Duty and motions Lifts per hour, shifts, load spectrum, hoist/cross/long travel speeds. Matches machinery and controls to real service.
Site and electrical Voltage, frequency, indoor conditions, earthing and conductor route. Defines electrical equipment and interface to the facility.

Catalogue capacities and spans describe available product families, not a universal railway-workshop specification. The approved general arrangement and crane-load schedule should be based on the specific bay.

    Bogie, Wheelset and Carbody Lifting

    Bogie and wheelset handling

Select the hook and attachment around the lifting points prescribed for the actual bogie or wheelset. Check load stability, sling angles, floor stand geometry and whether the trolley can place the load clear of nearby vehicles. Controlled low-speed travel is useful when aligning a heavy assembly to pins, jigs or rail vehicles.

    Long components and two-point lifts

A double-trolley bridge can provide two coordinated hook positions for long components. The design review must state each hoist’s rating, maximum combined load, load sharing, hook separation, controls, interlocks and response to uneven loading. If two independent cranes are proposed, the lift is a separate engineered operation with an approved plan and site controls.

    Whole carbody lifting

Carbody lifting may require purpose-built lifting jacks, synchronized hoists or an engineered multi-point system matched to the vehicle manufacturer’s approved lift points. Crane capacity by itself does not establish that a vehicle can be lifted safely.

Workshop Layout, Pits and Rail Interfaces

A track-centred drawing should show rolling-stock envelope, inspection-pit edges, platforms, doors, HVAC, lighting, cable trays and any overhead electrical equipment. Confirm where personnel stand to operate the crane and whether adjacent roads remain in service during a lift.

The crane’s span is the distance between runway-rail centers, not the overall building width. The usable hook area is smaller than the nominal bridge envelope because the trolley and end carriages have approach limits. For existing depots, survey the actual runway elevation, rail straightness and support condition rather than relying on architectural dimensions.

rail maintenance workshop overhead lifting equipment
Workshop geometry and operating clearances should be checked against the approved lift path.

Where overhead line equipment is present, the depot electrical authority must define isolation, earthing, access and clearance rules for the lifting zone. An insulated crane design, where specified, does not replace electrical isolation.

    Controls and Below-the-Hook Equipment

    Variable-speed motions

Inverter-controlled hoist and travel can improve approach to mating surfaces and reduce abrupt movement of suspended assemblies.

    Operator visibility

Choose pendant, radio remote or cab control according to line of sight, vehicle length, service pits and pedestrian routes.

    Lifting beams and fixtures

A beam or dedicated fixture must match the rail component’s approved lifting points and be included in total suspended mass.

    Two-hook controls

For multi-point lifts, define common control, independent control, load monitoring and the required response to loss of synchronization.

Ask for a control narrative and lifting-attachment drawing with the quotation when precise installation or synchronized lifting is part of the work scope.

    Safety, Inspection and Acceptance

The technical offer should identify the applicable crane design and local acceptance requirements for the destination. The final configuration must be assessed against the railway operator’s maintenance rules and the building’s structural design. Confirm overload protection, upper/lower limits, travel limits, emergency stop, buffers, alarms, brake behavior and safe maintenance access in the approved specification.

During installation and commissioning, verify runway geometry, electrical supply, crane travel, hoist motions, braking, controls and each project-specific attachment. Agree on factory inspection, site testing, documentation and the locally required load-test procedure before purchase. Operators also need a documented lift plan for abnormal or multi-point lifts.

No suspended load should pass over occupied workstations. Define exclusion zones around tracks and pits, lockout for maintenance, and a method to prevent unintended movement of vehicles during lifting.

    Lahore Orange Line maintenance facilities

Henan Mine Crane reports supplying 32 cranes of various types for the Lahore Orange Line metro operation and maintenance project in Pakistan. Its case record places crane products in the vehicle section and parking area for maintenance and commissioning. It does not state that all 32 were overhead cranes or publish individual crane ratings. View project record

These cases show experience in railway maintenance settings. A new depot still requires its own load schedule, bay drawings and approved lifting method.

Rail Workshop Overhead Crane Price and Budget

Public 2026 prices, checked on 28 September 2026, are a starting budget for ordinary overhead-crane equipment. A rail workshop quotation must be built from the actual crane specification and separately priced site work. The figures below are manufacturer-published market references in USD, not fixed offers for a railway maintenance installation.

Public 2026 reference Equipment-only range Publication and commercial scope
5 t single-girder overhead crane US$4,000–14,000 Henan Mine Crane market guide; equipment budget reference, delivery term not specified.
10 t double-girder overhead crane US$12,000–35,000 Henan Mine Crane market guide; equipment budget reference, delivery term not specified.
20 t double-girder overhead crane US$22,000–60,000 Henan Mine Crane market guide; equipment budget reference, delivery term not specified.
10–20 t double-girder overhead crane US$12,000–35,000 Voitto Crane, 5 June 2026; China FOB factory guide, supplier-specific public range.

These public ranges exclude or do not define freight, insurance, import duty, runway steel, building reinforcement, site electrification, installation, commissioning, local load testing and any bespoke lifting beam. Twin-trolley controls, synchronized lifting or a vehicle-specific fixture need a project quotation. For an installed depot budget, compare itemized crane equipment, structural works, electrical works and site services on the same scope.

What a Technical Offer Should Include

    • General arrangement showing bridge, trolley, hook approach, clearances and runway rail centers.
    • Rated load, hoist arrangement, duty classification, speeds, motor power and maximum wheel loads.
    • Runway and power-supply interface requirements, including conductor position and electrical data.
    • Safety device list, control narrative and any two-point lifting or attachment drawings.
    • Inspection and test plan, operation and maintenance manuals, spare-parts list and site-service scope.

For an existing building, the crane supplier’s wheel-load schedule should be reviewed by the facility structural engineer before purchase approval. For new works, exchange these interface documents before runway fabrication.

    Rail Workshop Crane RFQ Checklist

A useful request for quotation includes a marked-up bay plan and the following inputs:

    Buyer information Detail to send
Loads and lift points Heaviest bogie, wheelset or machine; attachments; center of gravity; any long or multi-point load.
Bay geometry Runway rail centers and length; floor, rail and pit elevations; roof clear height; obstacles.
Operating cycle Lifts per shift, shifts per day, load mix, desired speeds and positioning tolerance.
Electrical and site Voltage/frequency, power route, ambient conditions, existing runway drawings and destination.
Commercial scope Crane only or installed package; shipping term; installation, testing, training and spares.

Where the load is a complete carbody or other special railway assembly, include the vehicle maker’s lifting instructions and ask for a specific lifting concept rather than a generic overhead-crane quote.

    Rail Workshop Overhead Crane FAQ

What is the difference between a rail workshop overhead crane and an RMG?

A rail workshop overhead crane runs on elevated building runways to lift rolling-stock components inside a depot. An RMG runs on ground rails across container tracks and truck lanes at a freight terminal.

What capacity is needed for bogie maintenance?

Capacity is set by the heaviest complete suspended bogie or component, including beams and rigging. There is no safe universal tonnage; vehicle data and the lifting method must be reviewed.

Can one overhead crane lift a whole railway car?

Only if a vehicle-specific, engineered lifting system and approved procedure establish the load, lifting points, synchronization, structure and controls. Rated crane capacity alone is insufficient.

Is single or double girder better for a locomotive workshop?

Single girder can suit lighter component handling. Double girder is considered for heavier loads, longer spans, higher duty, precise trolley requirements or multiple hooks. The building and lift geometry decide the final choice.

    How is overhead-crane span measured?

Span is the center-to-center distance between the crane runway rails. Building width and rail-track gauge are different measurements.

What makes a railway workshop crane quote more expensive?

Capacity, span, duty, hook height, variable-speed control, twin trolleys, attachments, runway reinforcement, electrification and site services are major cost drivers.

Why work with us: our nuclear-sector project record includes both precision gantry handling and a 550t overhead crane. That experience gives your procurement team concrete equipment references to discuss alongside the proposed design.

A Crane Selected for the Actual Lifting Location

A nuclear power plant crane handles equipment during plant construction, assembly or maintenance. The term covers several different arrangements: a building-mounted overhead crane, a rail-mounted gantry crane and specialized nuclear handling equipment. Location, load path and safety function determine which arrangement belongs in the project.

For conventional-island buildings, workshops and construction areas, we develop overhead or gantry equipment around the load and available space. For safety-important duties, our technical review first addresses the plant classification, procurement standards and supplier qualification requirements. The offer states the accepted design scope and supporting documentation.

    Solutions for Plant Equipment Handling

Lifting task Equipment we can propose What the design provides
Turbine and generator maintenance A double-girder overhead crane with main and auxiliary lifting as appropriate. Coverage from equipment pickup to the agreed laydown positions, with controlled approach near the component.
Heavy component assembly An engineered overhead or gantry crane for the designated assembly area. A lifting arrangement matched to component mass, rigging, lifting points and available clearance.
Construction and fabrication handling A rail-mounted double-girder gantry crane. Working coverage across the selected bays, transport interfaces and component staging positions.
Maintenance workshops An overhead crane or electric-hoist arrangement sized for the workshop duty. Useful hook reach, service access and a configuration suited to the load spectrum.
Existing crane replacement A replacement crane evaluated against the current building or runway. Proposed wheel reactions, approach dimensions and erection interfaces for plant coordination.

Reactor polar cranes, refuelling equipment and spent-fuel handling belong to specialized procurement scopes. For these enquiries, project qualification and the applicable safety requirements are reviewed before equipment suitability is offered.

Choose the Overhead or Gantry Configuration

We start with the movement the crane must complete: where the load is collected, how it travels and where it is placed. The proposal then connects that route with the crane geometry, hoisting system and controls.

Project condition Our proposed approach Result for the project
An indoor bay with building runways Double-girder overhead crane with the required trolley and hook arrangement. Lifting coverage within the building, with wheel loads and clearance data for structural coordination.
An open yard or a bay without overhead supports Rail-mounted gantry configuration. Component transfer supported from ground-level runways.
Heavy lifts plus frequent lighter work Separate main and auxiliary lifting duties where suitable. Each hoisting mechanism is selected for its own load and operating cycle.
A load with two designated lifting points Engineered beam or coordinated lifting arrangement after reviewing load distribution. The technical proposal defines attachment geometry, permitted loading and control functions.
Restricted installation or maintenance clearance A layout study covering headroom, hook approach and machinery access. A crane arrangement that can be assembled and serviced within the available space.

    Compare the Main Crane Arrangements

Arrangement Main advantage Typical selection basis
Double-girder overhead crane Building-wide coverage without gantry legs at floor level. Runway capacity, span, hook approach, lifting height and maintenance space.
Double-girder gantry crane Coverage where a building runway is unavailable. Rail foundations, yard access, travel route and outdoor conditions.
Workshop electric-hoist crane A practical arrangement for smaller maintenance loads. Workshop load spectrum and the installed hoist rating.
Specialized nuclear handling crane Equipment developed for a defined nuclear handling function. Plant safety classification, procurement code, qualification and approved operating basis.

Crane geometry and nuclear classification are separate decisions. An overhead or gantry crane may require a specialized design when the lifting location or load path makes the duty safety-important.

Technical Details Included in Your Proposal

The capacity of a previous project is a reference, not a fixed catalogue range. We prepare a technical schedule for the crane being offered, so your engineering and purchasing teams can compare the same configuration.

Parameter How our proposal addresses it

Variable-frequency control allows the motion profile to combine transfer speed with controlled low-speed approach. We select speeds and acceleration around the lifting sequence.

Anti-sway matched to the operating task

The control package can include anti-sway for bridge and trolley movement. Its acceptance conditions are linked to representative loads, rope lengths and travel profiles.

    Visible operating status

PLC-based controls can bring mechanism status, limits and alarms together. The included displays, records and plant communication interfaces are identified in the electrical scope.

Regenerative drives are an option for suitable duties and site power systems. We assess them against the operating cycle; the 550t project includes energy recovery, but no fixed energy-saving percentage is promised for another crane.

A Defined Basis for Nuclear Project Procurement

The technical offer identifies the accepted crane duty and the requirements used to develop it. For a safety-important application, supplier eligibility, quality assurance, code compliance and qualification evidence are part of the pre-award review.

Procurement area How it is addressed
Top-running multiple-girder equipment ASME NOG-1 covers electric overhead and gantry cranes with top-running bridge and trolley used at nuclear facilities. The invoked edition and project requirements belong in the agreed design basis.
Heavy-load control at U.S. nuclear facilities NRC Regulatory Guide 1.244 provides guidance on heavy-load handling. Application follows the plant licensing and procurement basis.
Failure response and recovery The proposal identifies the accepted brake, protection and recovery functions. A single-failure-proof requirement calls for an assessment of the complete lifting system.
Seismic or environmental qualification Where applicable, qualification scope and supporting evidence are reviewed for the defined installation and components.
Quality assurance and traceability The agreed quality plan defines supplier approval, records, inspection participation and document submission.

Dual brakes and anti-sway are useful equipment features; they do not by themselves establish single-failure-proof performance or nuclear-code compliance. Qualification commitments appear in the project offer with the required evidence.

Inspection and Acceptance Planned with the Equipment

We manufacture against the approved crane design and agreed inspection plan. Your contracted document schedule makes the handover package visible during procurement, rather than leaving test records and manuals until dispatch.

Stage Deliverables within the agreed scope
Design coordination General arrangement, technical schedule, civil interface data and electrical documentation.
Manufacturing inspection Material and component records, fabrication inspections and specified welding / examination records.
Factory acceptance Reports for assembly, mechanisms, brakes, limits and contracted control functions; load tests under the approved procedure.
Site commissioning Installation and operating checks, agreed functional tests and site acceptance records.
Handover Operation and maintenance manuals, parts information, drawings and training records.

Customer or appointed third-party attendance can be coordinated with the agreed inspection stages. Specialized nuclear quality records and qualification reports are included only where expressly accepted in the supply scope.

Nuclear Power Plant Crane Price and Quotation Scope

A nuclear power plant crane is priced for its configuration and procurement scope. Capacity and span affect the equipment cost; classification, qualification, inspection and documentation can materially change the engineering and delivery package.

Henan Mine Crane provides a project quotation with separately identified equipment, engineering and site services. The delivery term and exclusions make it clear whether an offer covers the crane package, delivery to site or additional installation work.

Quotation item What the offer identifies
Mechanical equipment Bridge or gantry, trolley, hoisting machinery, travel drives and service access.
Electrical and controls Power distribution, VFDs, PLC, operating stations and selected positioning / monitoring functions.
Project engineering and quality Accepted design requirements, document schedule, inspection stages and any contracted qualification work.
Runway and site interfaces Included rails, electrification and installation materials, with civil works distinguished from crane supply.
Logistics and site services Packing, transport, installation guidance or attendance, commissioning and training as selected.
Lifecycle support Recommended initial spares, warranty scope and the agreed service arrangements.

Start with the lifting task and available layout for a preliminary budget discussion. We develop the equipment proposal and identify open items before issuing a firm quotation against the agreed scope.

Delivery Planned Around Construction or the Outage Window

We coordinate crane dimensions, shipping sections and assembly access during engineering. For an existing plant, the erection approach is developed alongside runway access, available lifting equipment and the permitted work area.

The project schedule links drawing approval, manufacture, inspection, shipment and contracted site work. The commercial offer states the delivery basis; a shutdown window or plant-access date is incorporated into the agreed programme rather than assumed from a standard lead time.

Commissioning support and operator training help the site team move from assembled equipment to the approved handling sequence. Site attendance, local installation work and plant operating authorization are allocated in the project scope.

    Maintenance and Spare-Parts Support

Henan Mine Crane supports parts identification, maintenance planning and technical troubleshooting. Nameplate details, drawings and component references let us identify the relevant rope, brake, drive or electrical part without treating a replacement as a generic catalogue purchase.

The equipment design addresses access to inspection and replacement points. Recommended initial spares and planned-service needs can be discussed before delivery, with warranty terms and service arrangements included in the commercial agreement.

Get an Equipment Proposal from the Information You Have

A brief lifting description, plant layout or existing crane drawing is enough to begin. Include the project country, approximate maximum load and target delivery date. If a procurement specification or crane classification is available, send it with the enquiry.

Our response develops the solution: the proposed crane type, main operating parameters, equipment and service scope, and the items to resolve before a firm offer. We help turn preliminary project information into a defined equipment proposal.

Henan Mine Crane · Rail-to-Road Container Transfer Systems

    Intermodal Terminal Crane Systems

Rail-mounted and rubber-tyred container cranes engineered for transfer between freight trains, trucks and storage blocks.

An intermodal terminal crane package is selected around track layout, live-rail clearances, truck exchange lanes, under-spreader load, train length, peak lifts per hour, yard storage strategy, power infrastructure and terminal-control interfaces.

What Is an Intermodal Terminal Crane?

An intermodal terminal crane transfers ISO containers between rail wagons, road vehicles and storage or exchange positions without unpacking the cargo. In a fixed rail transfer zone, the primary lifting machine is often a rail-mounted gantry crane (RMG). A rubber-tyred gantry crane (RTG) serves sites that need flexible block allocation; a straddle carrier can combine short-distance movement with stacking.

The purchase decision is determined by the complete transfer path: how many working rail tracks and truck lanes must be spanned, where containers are staged, how trains are switched, and how the terminal operating system dispatches each lift. A port-linked rail terminal may add quayside equipment, but a standalone inland rail-to-road facility does not require a ship-to-shore crane.

Henan Mine Crane supplies rail-mounted gantry cranes, RTG cranes and container straddle carriers for different terminal layouts.

Container Flow from Train to Truck or Yard

A rail-to-road move begins with the wagon stopping inside a protected lifting zone. After the lift path and container locks are confirmed, the spreader picks the box from the wagon, transfers it across the rail bundle and places it on a truck chassis or planned stack position. The reverse move loads an outbound train.

Rail service windows, road-vehicle queues and storage dwell time must be modeled together. A crane sized only for its nominal lift rate can still leave a train waiting when truck exchange positions or yard inventory control become the bottleneck.

container gantry cranes serving a freight terminal transfer yard
Transfer performance depends on synchronized rail, truck and storage capacity.

    Direct rail-to-truck

Prioritize wagon reach, safe truck exchange and short container travel.

    Rail-to-stack

Prioritize stacking height, retrieval logic, rehandles and inventory accuracy.

    Rail-to-rail

Check whether the same crane span covers both train tracks and required buffer positions.

    Intermodal Terminal Crane Selection Considerations

    Track and lane geometry

Set rail centers, train envelope, truck lanes, stack rows, maintenance access and future expansion before fixing the crane span.

    Under-spreader duty

Specify the loaded-container gross mass, spreader and headblock masses, duty cycle, wind case and overload policy separately.

    Peak transfer demand

Use train schedules, peak lifts per hour, operating hours, dwell and rehandles to size the fleet.

    Ground and rail interface

Confirm wheel loads, rail/foundation scope, pavement bearing, drainage and utilities with the civil designer.

    Power and controls

Compare cable-fed electric RMGs with diesel, hybrid or electric RTGs using site power availability and operating profile.

    Operating model

Set cabin, remote or automated operation and define terminal-control handshakes, recovery and manual override.

A fixed, high-volume rail bundle generally favors an RMG. A terminal with changing blocks or staged expansion may favor an RTG. The final selection depends on measured site geometry and an agreed operating model.

    Intermodal Terminal Crane Configurations Compared

Configuration Best-fit duty Principal advantage Critical site requirement
Rail-mounted gantry (RMG) Fixed rail bundle with truck exchange and/or storage lanes Wide fixed coverage and grid-electric operation Rails, foundations, end clearances and rail-track possession
Rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) Changing yard blocks, phased development or shared rail/stack duty Can relocate between operating zones Pavement bearing, turning space, charging or fuel support
Container straddle carrier Short-haul transfer between rail-side exchange and distributed stacks Transport and stacking in one mobile machine Traffic segregation, vehicle routes and maintenance access
Container overhead crane Covered or structurally constrained transfer bay Fixed-area handling where a runway is available Verified building structure, clearances and runway loads

Each configuration needs a project-specific equipment schedule. General-purpose gantry cranes and container cranes should not be treated as interchangeable without a spreader, duty and site-interface review.

Published Container Crane Ranges for Early Screening

Henan Mine Crane publishes the following RMG range for its port-crane product family. These are product-family values, not a guaranteed specification for every intermodal terminal.

Parameter Published RMG range What must be fixed in the RFQ
Rated lifting capacity 35 t, 40.5 t or 50 t; customized options State whether the rating is under the spreader and include accessory weights.
Span 18–35 m or customized Submit track centers, lanes, stack rows and clearance drawings.
Lifting height 12.3–21 m or customized Define railcar and truck envelopes plus required stacking height.
Work class A6–A8 Specify annual cycles and lift spectrum rather than selecting duty from a label alone.
Lifting speed 0–20 m/min Require loaded and empty motion speeds with acceleration and cycle assumptions.

Published range: Henan Mine Crane RMG product data. Final parameters are confirmed through the terminal layout, structural calculations and approved drawings.

Rail Span, Clearance and Throughput Planning

The rail interface controls much of the crane geometry. Draw the live track envelope, adjacent track clearance, wagon height, truck height, maintenance lane and any overhead electrification or signaling constraints before releasing the general arrangement. The crane must fit the highest credible operating container and the required spreader clearance.

Fleet sizing should use peak train arrival patterns, permitted working windows, expected container mix, average rehandles and realistic operating availability. Throughput expressed in TEU or tonnes cannot be converted directly into crane moves without the operating assumptions.

rail-mounted container gantry crane spanning a rail transfer zone
A fixed crane span must cover the rail, truck and buffer positions required by the operating plan.

    Working rail tracks

Track count, centers and train length set span and crane travel.

    Truck exchange

Chassis positions and turn times set lane count and traffic control.

    Storage and peak flow

Dwell, stack tiers, rehandles and peak lifts set fleet duty and redundancy.

    Rail obstructions

Electrification and other overhead assets set lifting clearances and isolation procedures.

RMG vs. RTG for Intermodal Terminals

    Decision factor RMG RTG
Travel path Fixed rails along a planned transfer corridor Tyres allow movement between blocks
Site investment Rail foundations and power distribution must be designed early Pavement, traffic lanes and power/fuel infrastructure are critical
Rail-bundle coverage Good fit for repeated moves over a stable rail layout Useful where rail-side duty shares a broader flexible yard
Expansion Rail alignment sets the operating envelope Equipment can be redeployed if geometry and ground conditions permit
Automation Fixed geometry can simplify positioning and repeatability Automation requires vehicle guidance, geofencing and route control

The lowest equipment price does not determine the lower-cost terminal. Rails, foundations, pavement, power, fuel, labor, maintenance, fleet flexibility and construction phasing belong in the same lifecycle comparison.

Spreaders, Railcar Interface and Load Control

The spreader and headblock are part of the rated lifting system. Define 20 ft, 40 ft and 45 ft handling, single- or twin-lift duty, twistlock confirmation, skew correction, rotation, anti-sway and safe landing logic. Any non-container cargo requires a separately engineered attachment and operating procedure.

    Rail wagon pickup

Confirm wagon position, lock release, adjacent-track restrictions and visibility of the pick point.

    Truck landing

Specify chassis height range, traffic stop positions and anti-collision zones.

    Stack placement

Set maximum tier, approach path, container recognition and mis-stow prevention.

    Exception handling

Define response to failed twistlock status, uneven load, lost communication or power interruption.

Controls should prevent travel or hoist commands that conflict with confirmed spreader and landing states. Acceptance tests should demonstrate these interlocks with representative containers.

Automation, Remote Operation and Terminal Interfaces

Remote operation or automation is a system decision. A terminal operating system issues work orders; the equipment control system validates location, route, spreader state and safe zones; the crane reports completion and exceptions. OCR, positioning and anti-sway may be added according to the operating concept.

The RFQ should specify the interface owner, data fields, latency and fail-safe behavior. Manual recovery, local maintenance mode, remote-station visibility and a clear handover procedure are required when the crane cannot complete a commanded move.

automated container gantry crane with remote monitoring equipment
Control interfaces should be specified alongside equipment and civil works, not added after installation.
    • Work-order acknowledgement and container identity exchange
    • Railcar, chassis and stack-position confirmation
    • Obstacle detection, exclusion zones and emergency-stop integration
    • Cybersecurity, network availability and logged exception recovery

Power, Civil Works and Lifecycle Cost

    Electric RMG

Define incoming voltage, cable-reel or conductor system, peak demand, regeneration treatment and emergency power behavior.

    RTG power options

Compare diesel, hybrid and electric supply against site emissions rules, charging access, operating hours and movement between blocks.

    Civil boundary

Allocate rail beams, pavement, drainage, power trenches, lighting and communications to named contract packages.

    Service and spares

Price critical drives, brakes, spreader parts, tyres or wheel assemblies, remote diagnostics and on-site response.

A like-for-like comparison requires the same capacity, span, stacking height, duty, automation scope, incoterm and acceptance scope. Operating-cost estimates should show electricity or fuel use, maintenance and expected utilization assumptions.

Outdoor Conditions, Wind and Storm Securing

Intermodal yards operate through heat, rain, dust and wind. The approved design basis should state local temperature range, wind conditions, seismic requirements where applicable, corrosion exposure and any dust or snow loading. Outdoor electrical protection and maintenance access should match the site environment.

For rail-mounted equipment, the storm procedure needs a defined wind alarm, operating stop threshold, rail clamps or other restraint, and a secured parking position. For rubber-tyred equipment, the procedure must address parking, brake condition, tie-downs and traffic control. Design wind speeds and restraint loads are project-specific and must be verified in engineering.

    Safety, Standards and Acceptance Testing

Acceptance should test the full transfer sequence, not only the nominal hoist capacity. The agreed package should cover structural and electrical documentation, spreader compatibility, overload protection, limit devices, emergency stops, anti-collision, braking, wind alarms and rescue access. Applicable local crane, electrical and rail-interface requirements are set in the contract.

    Design review

General arrangement, load cases, wheel loads, rail/foundation interface and control philosophy.

    Intermodal Terminal Crane FAQ

Which crane is normally used at a rail intermodal terminal?

A rail-mounted gantry crane is a common choice where rail tracks and truck or stack positions remain fixed. RTGs can suit terminals that need redeployment between blocks or phased expansion. The choice follows actual geometry and throughput.

What capacity should an intermodal crane have?

Capacity is specified under the spreader for the heaviest approved loaded container, with spreader and headblock masses addressed in the hoist and structural design. Published 35 t, 40.5 t and 50 t product ratings are screening options, not a substitute for a site lift study.

Can one RMG span several rail tracks and a truck lane?

Yes, if the engineered span and clearances cover the entire rail bundle, truck exchange positions and maintenance access. The track centers and operating envelopes must be provided before the crane geometry is fixed.

Can an RTG work in a rail terminal?

Yes. An RTG can serve rail-side exchange and storage where pavement bearing, traffic routes, turning space and safe segregation are designed for the machine.

Can an existing intermodal crane be automated?

Some cranes can accept positioning, remote-operation or automated functions after a structural, electrical, controls, network and safety assessment. Integration and remaining equipment life determine the practical scope.

What is included in an intermodal crane price?

Public numbers may describe a factory machine, a specific stocked unit or a multi-crane contract. A comparable project quote must list the spreader, power system, controls, civil interfaces, transport, erection, testing, training and spares.

What should be tested before handover?

The agreed FAT and SAT should cover rated-load operation, railcar and truck transfers, spreader confirmation, safe zones, wind and fault alarms, emergency stops, recovery procedures and terminal-system handshakes.

    PROJECT BASIS

    Throughput, Dwell and Expansion

What Is an Inland Container Depot Crane?

An inland container depot crane transfers, stacks and retrieves ISO containers at an inland container depot (ICD), dry port or intermodal rail terminal. It connects rail wagons, road trucks, storage blocks, inspection positions and empty-container areas without a ship-to-shore interface.

The term describes a facility application rather than one machine type. A fixed, high-volume rail apron commonly favors a rail-mounted gantry crane. Flexible storage blocks or staged development commonly favor a rubber-tyred gantry crane. Lower-throughput start-up yards may use reach stackers, while empty-container and repair zones often use dedicated mobile handlers.

The correct selection therefore begins with the depot operating model: annual TEU, peak train and gate demand, container dwell distribution, required stacking density, rehandle tolerance, rail service pattern, customs status and the date at which expansion must remain possible.

Inland Container Depot Crane Selection Considerations

    Throughput and Peak Windows

Annual TEU alone is insufficient. Peak train discharge, truck appointments, operating shifts, wagon cut length and recovery capacity establish the required hourly moves and crane quantity.

    Rail and Truck Interface

Track count, wagon clearance, electrification, road-truck lanes, chassis queues and transfer-buffer positions determine span, cantilever and operating sequence.

    Container Mix and Dwell

20/40/45 ft mix, gross mass, reefer share, empties, customs holds, hazardous cargo and dwell-time variation affect block zoning, spreader duty and rehandles.

    Land and Storage Density

Available hectares, stack height, row count, fire lanes, reefer access and expansion corridors determine whether mobility or fixed high-density coverage has greater value.

    Civil and Utility Readiness

Ground bearing, axle or wheel loads, rail foundations, drainage, substation capacity, conductor routes and communications infrastructure shape total installed cost.

    Operating Model and Growth

Manual, remote or automated operation, fleet dispatch, maintenance staffing, customs procedures and staged block commissioning should be fixed before final specification.

    ICD Container Handling Systems Compared

System Strongest Fit Main Advantage Main Constraint
Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) Permanent rail apron or stable high-density block Wide coverage, grid power, repeatable travel path and strong automation potential Rails, foundations and block geometry are fixed capital interfaces
Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) Growing depot with several storage blocks Can change blocks and supports phased layout development Pavement, steering, block-change route and power source need control
Reach Stacker Start-up or lower-throughput depot with variable work areas Fast deployment and direct rail, truck and stack access Lower storage density, outreach derating, rehandles and concentrated axle loads
Empty Container Handler Empty storage, repair and inspection area High stacking for light containers with mobile deployment Not a substitute for laden-container duty
Container Straddle Carrier Mobile terminal needing transport plus stacking Reduces handovers between horizontal transport and stack equipment Traffic, lane width, pavement and fleet dispatch become critical
Fixed Container Overhead Crane Covered inspection, transfer or specialist handling bay Controlled fixed-area operation with clear floor routes Limited to the runway envelope and dedicated interfaces

Configuration rule: reach stackers suit flexible start-up operations; RTGs suit relocatable block development; RMGs suit stable rail interfaces and high-density long-term capacity. Many ICDs use a hybrid fleet rather than one equipment type throughout the site.

Crane Duties Across an Inland Container Depot

A rail apron requires predictable wagon access, safe clearance from tracks and a transfer plan that prevents the crane from waiting for trucks. Laden-container blocks prioritize storage density and retrieval sequence. Empty and repair areas prioritize fast sorting, high stacking and workshop access.

Customs inspection and bonded zones require positive container identification, controlled release status and a defined location for opening, scanning or examination. Reefer rows require electrical access without placing personnel in uncontrolled crane or truck paths.

Gate buffers, chassis parking, hazardous-goods segregation, fire routes and maintenance access should be represented on the same layout used to define crane span and travel. Isolated equipment selection cannot correct a conflicting depot flow.

container gantry cranes serving inland depot storage and transfer zones
Rail transfer, laden storage, empty handling, inspection and gate exchange create different crane duties within the same depot.

Published Henan Mine Crane RMG and RTG Ranges

These published product-family ranges support concept selection. The contract specification is established from verified loads, geometry, duty spectrum, wind, temperature, electrical supply, applicable code and the required container spreader.

Equipment Family Published Capacity Published Span Published Lift Published Duty
    RMG Container Gantry Crane 35 t, 40.5 t, 50 t or customized 18–35 m or customized 12.3–21 m or customized A6–A8; lifting speed 0–20 m/min
    RTG Container Gantry Crane 35 t, 40.5 t, 50 t or customized 8–35 m or customized 6–21 m or customized A6–A8

Rated load must state whether it applies under the spreader, at the ropes or to another contract reference point. The spreader self-weight, eccentric loading, wind and dynamic effects remain part of the design basis.

Rail Apron, Truck Lane and Block Layout

RMG crane spanning rail tracks and container transfer area at an inland terminal
Track centers, wagon envelope, truck lanes, stack rows and maintenance routes establish the working envelope.

For rail service, the general arrangement should show track centers, wagon and locomotive envelopes, switch locations, signal sightlines, overhead electrification or catenary exclusions, safe access and emergency egress. The crane must not obstruct train assembly or trap road vehicles inside the rail zone.

For road exchange, truck lanes require verified turning paths, chassis alignment, queue capacity, driver-safe zones and protection from gantry travel. Cantilevers can place exchange positions outside the main rail gauge, but increase structural reactions and foundation scope.

Future tracks, block extensions and a second crane should appear on the concept layout even when they are not included in phase one. Early reservations for foundations, conductors, substations and network routes prevent later capacity from being blocked by completed civil works.

ICD Crane Capacity and Fleet Sizing

Crane quantity follows the busiest operating interval, not an annual average. A sizing model should include productive moves, rehandles, housekeeping moves, train cut changes, truck variability, customs holds, operator changes, planned maintenance and a defined outage scenario.

    Demand Inputs
Annual TEU, peak train moves, gate profile, operating days, shifts and wagon cut length.
    Move Content
Direct transfer, stack placement, retrieval, rehandles, empty moves and customs inspection moves.
    Availability Basis
Preventive maintenance, fault allowance, refueling or charging, block change and recovery reserve.
    Acceptance Metric
Moves per operating hour, train completion window, truck cycle target and equipment availability definition.

A simulation or time-and-motion study is appropriate when one crane serves several tracks, when truck arrivals are highly variable or when two cranes share an overlapping rail apron. The study should state every assumption used to support the contracted capacity.

Spreader, Anti-Sway and Depot Control Functions

A telescopic spreader is specified for the required 20 ft, 40 ft and 45 ft containers, twistlock indication, flipper arrangement, sideshift, skew correction and optional rotation. Twin-lift or special cargo duty requires a separate load and operating study.

Anti-sway, controlled acceleration and fine positioning support safer placement on wagons, chassis and stacks. Position references may include encoders, laser systems, GNSS, cameras or other site-specific sensors; performance must be defined at the actual working position and environmental condition.

Container ID, job order, location confirmation, release status and fault data can exchange with terminal, yard or customs systems through a documented interface register. The contract should identify the data owner, message format, network boundary, cybersecurity responsibility and fallback operating mode.

anti-sway RMG crane lifting a container at an inland logistics hub
Spreader functions, anti-sway and positive job confirmation support repeatable rail, truck and stack handling.

    Power, Electrification and Automation Readiness

rubber-tyred gantry cranes for flexible inland container depot blocks
RTG mobility supports phased blocks; RMG electrification supports fixed high-density lanes and repeatable control.

RMG cranes normally suit continuous grid power through a cable reel, festoon or conductor arrangement selected for the travel length and site standard. RTG options can include diesel-electric, hybrid, battery or grid-fed arrangements. Utility capacity, harmonic limits, regeneration, redundancy and emergency recovery belong in the early power study.

Manual cabin or radio operation can be combined with anti-sway, travel positioning and job guidance. Remote or automated operation adds controlled transfer zones, obstacle detection, truck or wagon alignment, equipment-control logic, video coverage, network resilience and formal software acceptance testing.

An automation-ready first phase can reserve structural mounting points, drive and brake performance, PLC capacity, network pathways, position references and safety interfaces. Reserved features should be listed as supplied, wired, programmed or future-only to avoid an ambiguous upgrade scope.

    Civil, Wind and Environmental Interfaces

    Rail and Foundation

RMG wheel loads, rail gauge, straightness, level, settlement, end stops, buffers and storm anchors require coordinated tolerances and survey records.

    Pavement and Drainage

RTG and reach-stacker wheel or axle loads, steering paths, local rutting, drainage falls and buried services should be checked across every operating route.

    Wind and Storm Securing

Operating limits, alarm thresholds, parking orientation, rail clamps, anchors and out-of-service design wind follow verified local data and the agreed structural code.

    Climate and Corrosion

Temperature, dust, altitude, humidity, rainfall, lightning, industrial pollution and de-icing exposure determine materials, coatings, enclosures and component conditioning.

    Maintenance Access

Isolation points, platforms, fall protection, lighting, machinery access, lifting points and component-removal routes support safe planned maintenance.

    Contract Codes

Applicable ISO, FEM, EN, IEC, railway, machinery and local requirements should be listed with a clear document hierarchy and compliance schedule.

    Safety, Security and Customs-Controlled Operations

An inland depot combines heavy equipment, live rail, public road trucks, restricted cargo and human inspection activity. The operating concept should separate people from crane travel, containers and vehicle paths while preserving emergency access and verifiable cargo custody.

    Machine Protection
Overload, limits, brakes, overspeed, emergency stops, travel protection and controlled fault recovery.
    Traffic Separation
Truck guidance, barriers, pedestrian exclusion, rail permissions, warning systems and visibility controls.
    Container Custody
ID confirmation, seal-status process, release authority, audit trail and exception handling.
    Special Cargo
Reefer access, hazardous segregation, damaged units, out-of-gauge loads and inspection isolation.

    Greenfield and Phased ICD Development

Development Stage Typical Handling Approach Capacity Reservation
Start-Up Volume Reach stacker or limited mobile fleet for variable rail, truck and stack work Protect future rails, blocks, substation space and circulation corridors
Growing Depot RTG blocks with mobile equipment retained for inspection and exceptions Prepare pavement, power route, data network and block-change path
Stable High Volume RMG rail apron or high-density electric blocks with controlled transfer lanes Allow second crane, extended runway, redundant power and automation interfaces

A phased master plan should preserve the final traffic pattern from the first civil package. Temporary equipment can serve early demand, but permanent rail, drainage and utility decisions should remain compatible with the long-term handling system.

    5-Million-Tonne Logistics Hub

Henan Mine Crane published a 40.5 t rail-mounted container gantry crane project for Wanli Land Port in Ordos. The land port was planned as a logistics hub for the distribution and transshipment of containers and new-energy-related materials, with a stated annual design target of 5 million tonnes.

The disclosed crane configuration includes a Schneider variable-frequency drive system, Siemens PLC control, intelligent anti-sway and remote operating-status monitoring. Equipment data connects with the land port energy data platform for coordinated logistics information management.

The case illustrates an ICD procurement boundary extending beyond steel structure and hoisting machinery: spreader control, positioning, safety logic, data interfaces and site commissioning must be engineered together. Final output remains dependent on the depot layout, train and truck flow, staffing and contracted acceptance test.

    Inland Container Depot Crane FAQ

What is the best crane for an inland container depot?

An RMG normally fits a permanent high-volume rail apron or dense block. An RTG fits flexible or phased storage blocks. A reach stacker often fits start-up and lower-throughput work. A hybrid fleet can separate rail, laden, empty and exception duties.

How much does an inland container depot crane cost?

Current public references reviewed in September 2026 place 40 t RTGs around US$280,000–350,000 and broad 40–100 t RMG configurations around US$200,000–2,000,000+. Delivered project cost depends on rails or pavement, power, controls, freight, installation and tests.

When should an ICD replace reach stackers with gantry cranes?

The change becomes attractive when land density, peak train completion, fuel and maintenance, rehandles or fleet congestion outweigh the flexibility of mobile handlers. A lifecycle model should compare the same throughput and civil boundary.

Can one RMG serve both rail tracks and storage rows?

Yes, when the span, cantilevers, clearances and operating sequence cover both functions. Fleet studies should verify that train service does not block stack retrieval or truck exchange during peak periods.

What information is needed for an accurate ICD crane quote?

The essential package includes a CAD layout, track and wagon data, stack geometry, throughput profile, container mix, rated-load basis, power supply, wind and climate data, control scope, destination, Incoterm and site-service boundary.

Can an inland depot crane be automated later?

Later automation is feasible when the original structure, drives, braking, PLC, positioning references, networks and safety zones support the upgrade. Automation-ready provisions should be contractually defined during the initial purchase.

POWER PLANT & HYDROPOWER OVERHEAD CRANES

    Generator Maintenance Crane

Lift a generator rotor clear of the unit, carry it to the overhaul floor, then return it within the clearances the OEM requires. That sequence—not the generator’s MW rating—defines the crane.

Henan Mine Crane configures powerhouse overhead cranes around component weights, lifting gear, hook travel and building loads. Main and auxiliary hooks, low-headroom trolleys and synchronized lifting are specified where the lift plan calls for them.

What Is a Generator Maintenance Crane?

A generator maintenance crane is the overhead lifting system used to remove and transfer heavy generator parts during a power-plant outage. It normally spans the turbine hall or hydropower machine hall and serves the unit and overhaul area. The governing load might be the complete rotor, a turbine component or, where replacement is planned, the stator. The overhaul strategy decides whether an exceptional stator lift belongs in the crane specification.

Lifting beams, slings, shackles and other below-hook gear add weight and use headroom. Rotor withdrawal may also require a separate OEM-approved extraction frame or skid arrangement before the overhead hook can take the load. Put those steps on the drawing before ordering the crane.

Lift Information to obtain Crane implication
Generator rotor Assembly mass, center of gravity, lifting points, extraction tooling and maintenance-stand location. Main-hook rating, vertical stroke, hook approach and clear travel path.
Stator or generator-motor assembly Whether removal is required, lifting-point reactions, spreader dimensions and allowable tilt. Potential high-capacity or synchronized lift; assess each hook and runway.
Covers, bearings and auxiliaries Individual masses, pickup locations and lifting frequency. An auxiliary hook or separate service hoist may suit routine jobs.

    Generator Maintenance Applications

The crane should cover the actual dismantling, transfer and reassembly operations on the maintenance schedule. The rotor often needs a separate extraction tool before the bridge crane can lift it.

Operation Lifting route and equipment Crane duty
Rotor overhaul Pick up the rotor from its approved tool or support, clear the unit, move to the service stand and return it. Verify hook access at both ends, rigging height, travel route and precise lowering.
Stator or generator-motor replacement Handle the complete assembly only where the plant plan requires it and lifting points permit. Check total suspended mass, lift-point loads, hook spacing, runway and any synchronization.
Bearings, covers and auxiliaries Move parts between the generator, laydown floor and service positions. Use an auxiliary hook or smaller service hoist where it offers better coverage.
Future unit modernization Remove replacement assemblies after surrounding pipes, platforms and cable routes are complete. Reserve hook approach and clearance for the fully built plant, not only the construction stage.

    Generator Maintenance Crane Selection Considerations

A double-girder, top-running overhead crane is the usual starting point for a heavy generator lift. The number of hooks and their rated duties depend on how the actual component is supported.

Arrangement Suitable lift Critical design check
Main and auxiliary hooks Heavy rotor handling plus smaller covers, bearings and service components. State each hook’s rating and travel envelope separately. The auxiliary hook is not automatically a second lifting point for the main load.
Two synchronized main hooks Large assemblies with two engineered lifting points. Set hook-height difference, load-sharing, fault-response and test criteria.
Two coordinated bridge cranes Exceptional lifts supported by the runways and lift plan. Calculate each crane’s load throughout the motion; nameplate capacities cannot simply be added.
Separate auxiliary crane or hoist Routine work outside the heavy generator lift. Check its supports and coverage independently.

The rated capacity and control scheme are established from approved component and rigging data.

Generator Maintenance Crane Compared with Other Lifting Arrangements

Compare the alternatives against the same rotor weight, lifting points, machine-hall drawing and laydown position.

Arrangement Coverage When it fits Limitation to check
Main double-girder overhead crane Full turbine or machine-hall bay Heavy rotor and generating-unit lifts Runway strength, hook height and end approach
Low-headroom heavy bridge crane Full bay in constrained underground hall Large generator-motor assembly with restricted roof clearance Trolley envelope and maintenance access
Electric-hoist double-girder crane Service or auxiliary bay Smaller components within product rating Not automatically suitable for primary rotor or stator lift
Local electric hoist One station or limited route Covers, bearings, tools and small equipment No full-bay transfer capability

Powerhouse Layout, Headroom and Existing Runway

A crane can have enough rated capacity and still fail the lift. Check the rotor and lifting beam at the highest obstruction, hook position above the machine centerline, the route past platforms and pipework, and the floor area where the load will be set down.

    New powerhouse

Freeze the crane envelope and wheel loads with the building design. Show rail elevation, hook approach, trolley height, walkway and equipment access on a coordinated general arrangement.

    Existing powerhouse

Survey rails, runway beams and supports. The new bridge’s wheel loads, trolley positions and braking forces can differ from the old crane even at the same hook rating.

    Underground hydro hall

Confirm the lift above the generator pit and roof-to-rail depth. A low-headroom arrangement can recover hook height, but it must still permit crane inspection and parts removal.

    Capacity and Technical Parameters

Published Henan Mine Crane catalogue families include the QD hook bridge series below. These are model-family ratings, not preselected generator-maintenance packages. Span, lift, working class, speeds and wheel loads are confirmed against the particular powerhouse.

QD hook bridge catalogue family Nominal main/auxiliary rating Selection note
QD 75/20–100/20 75/20–100/20 t Compare the heaviest suspended maintenance load and auxiliary work.
QD 125/32–250/50 125/32–250/50 t Evaluate rotor or turbine assembly weight and the hall runway.
QD 300/40–350/75 300/40–350/75 t Review major component lifting points, hook coverage and maintenance access.
QD 400/80–450/80 400/80–450/80 t Confirm civil loads, erection access and acceptance scope.
Project-specific high-capacity system 600 t published pumped-storage example Requires a separate engineered configuration; not a catalogue QD rating.

    A “100/20 t” rating denotes a 100 t main hook and a 20 t auxiliary hook; it does not mean 120 t combined lifting capacity.

    Generator Maintenance Crane FAQ

How do I size the crane for a generator rotor?

Use the maximum suspended weight under the agreed rating basis, including the rotor assembly and lifting gear. Confirm pickup geometry, vertical stroke and the route to the maintenance stand. MW output does not determine crane capacity.

    Is a 100 t main hook enough for a 100 t component?

Not on component mass alone. The lifting beam and rigging add weight; the design rules and lift procedure establish the allowable load. Obtain the complete suspended-load schedule first.

Can two cranes lift a generator stator together?

Yes, when a qualified plan verifies the load on each crane and lifting point throughout the operation, plus uneven loading, differential motion, runway reactions, communication and a stop or fault response.

Can the original runway be reused?

Possibly, after structural and condition checks against the new crane’s wheel loads and horizontal forces. A different trolley layout can require strengthening even when the span is unchanged.

What lead time should the project allow?

Set separate dates for drawing approval, fabrication, factory inspection, dispatch, runway readiness, erection and commissioning. The schedule depends on the approved configuration and destination.
